History -------
I learned digital art in the BBS scene. ANSI and ASCII, 80 columns, 16 colors, a modem handshake for an opening credits sequence. Before the browser there was the bulletin board: dial-up worlds run out of spare bedrooms, where art was drawn in text mode and traded in ANSI packs, and the canvas was a glowing cursor waiting on a prompt.
Nostalgia is not looking backward. It is a material. The blink, the block, the lattice, the constraint of a fixed grid -- those are still where the work starts. The banner at the top of this file is drawn in the same alphabet.
The reference shelf that raised it: METAL HEART, ComputerArts, and the rest of the pile -- the books that turned a kid with a dial-up connection into a designer.
